North West Eye & Retina

The client

North West Eye & Retina is a newly established ophthalmology clinic in the heart of Brisbane’s northwest. A family affair, it comprises husband/wife duo Sing-Pey and Michael, as well as Michael’s sister Kate (fun fact: they have a brother; also an opthalmologist).

The brief

Website Design

The team had invested in a logo, yet needed a website launched alongside the opening of their clinic. Much of the copy had already been written, so this was a pretty straightforward project involving the development of a Squarespace website.

The creative

I wanted to pull away from the standard navy/blue/green combos that tend to dominate healthcare. Whilst these colours are chosen for good reason (they imbue a sense of trust, and a clean or ‘clinical’ look-and-feel) I wanted the website to convey a sense of personality, and also reference eyes — the nature of the work they do. With the supplied logo coming to me in navy and cyan, I let these colours lead whilst also incorporating a colour palette based around the varying colours of the human eye: blue, cyan, green, hazel and brown.

The result is a somewhat unexpected departure from your normal medical website, with layers of subtle colours ably supported by the beautiful shot photography that the team had commissioned, as well as an evocative header image — one of my favourites — of a grandfather fishing with his grandson. Sing-Pey cleverly found this image herself, and loved it as it reminded her of her children’s own grandfather fishing with her children on the waters around Brisbane.

What a pleasure it was to help this team get their business off the ground! Here’s a look at the work we did together:
